Letters to Eli
Time & Location
About the event
The United States is the world’s leader in incarceration with a reported 2.2 million people currently in a local, state or federal prison. My brother Eli has been one of these people for most of his adult life. He's 47 years old. That's a long time to survive in an environment designed to break down, dehumanize and harden the soul.
Communication by phone is limited leaving old-fashioned letters as the primary source of connection…that’s if an inmate is fortunate enough to have people on the outside willing to stay in touch. Sadly, most do not.
I’ll admit I’ve not been the best at writing to my brother. And for many years I succumbed to feelings of shame and guilt and kept my brother’s situation a secret. I thought his incarceration would make me and my family look bad. What would people say?
Thankfully, my own spiritual progression has led me to a better place of understanding and despite his transgressions Eli is a human being deserving of love, compassion and connection. When an inmate (any person for that matter) experiences social rejection for who they are they slowly begin to deteriorate physically, emotionally and spiritually leaving them more susceptible to depression, self-harm and a greater possibility of recidivism.
What if we on the outside of the system could take one small action that could ignite some happiness and a sense of human connection for someone like Eli so that when he comes back into society he has a baseline of self worth and confidence in himself?
Imagine what it would be like to receive a flood of letters from loving strangers filled with words of hope and encouragement to keep on living?
The idea for Letters to Eli came to me while meditating on the beach in Encinitas, San Diego. And now it is time to unleash this wave of love! Letters to Eli is your opportunity to do an act of kindness by sending him a simple letter. It’s a chance to share some Light by sharing kind words from your heart letting him know that he is loved, worthy and important. After all, isn’t that what we all desire for ourselves?
